Uptown Greenwood

Maxwell Avenue Market Stands Open Monday

October 6, 2011

Greenwood, SC Starting Monday, October 10, fresh and local return to Uptown Greenwood as two produce stands open on Maxwell Avenue for a fall season.

The stands, located across from The Mill House restaurant, are an initiative made possible through the South Carolina Rural Infrastructure Fund and are a cooperative effort between the City of Greenwood, Department of Commerce, Department of Agriculture, and Department of Corrections. The Department of Corrections provided the labor needed to construct the stands. The City will own and operate the stands.

The stands will open weekly through Saturday, November 19 on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. The hours of operation are 9 AM – 5 PM.

To sell from the stands, a farmer must have a farm located in the seven county region (Abbeville, Edgefield, Greenwood, Laurens, McCormick, Newberry, and Saluda). They must also submit a refundable maintenance bond, present liability insurance coverage, and have a valid Grower Permit issued by the Clemson University Cooperative Extension Office.

The fee for renting the stand from the City is $15 for the full day.

Two Certified South Carolina Members through the SC Department of Agriculture have initially signed on to sell from the stands during the fall season. Parisi Farms of Abbeville and Early Bird Farm of Hodges will alternate dates. Both farms sold items from the stands during the 2011 summer season.

The fresh produce for sell will depend on the seasonal availability.

For this coming Monday, residents can expect to find eggplant, peppers (hot and sweet), kale, carrots, tomatoes (small quantities), cucumber (small quantities), butternut squash, acorn squash, sweet potatoes, white sweet potatoes, apples, pumpkins, and cabbage.

Some of the above summer produce will only be available at the beginning of the fall season. A number of additional items, including a variety of lettuce and broccoli, will be added during the fall season.
