“We have been making every effort to notify businesses in the area and major transportation providers, such as Greenwood School District 50, of the pending closure and detour,” said Greenwood Assistant City Manager Charlie Barrineau.
“Businesses in the area will be open and accessible and we do appreciate everyone’s cooperation with the inconveniences of construction,” Barrineau concluded.
The work on the lower block of Maxwell Avenue is anticipated to take a minimum of two weeks. The construction schedule is dependent on the weather.
Upon the competition of the lower block, a road closure and construction detour will move to the upper block of Maxwell Avenue from EMBARQ to the Greenwood Building.
The general contractor for the project, AOS Specialty Contractors of Columbia, will also begin planting extensive landscaping in the area in the coming weeks. Over twenty street trees will be planted.
Greenwood City Council approved the expenditure of nearly $1 million for a streetscape project on Maxwell Avenue, a project which will be highly similar to the one that transformed the adjoining Oregon Avenue.
According to Barrineau, and estimated $320,000 for the project will come from a SC Department of Commerce Rural Opportunity Investment grant, with the balance being paid for through hospitality taxes.
