BBQ and Blues Music To Fill Uptown Greenwood
June 29, 2016
GREENWOOD, SC - 85 competition BBQ teams. 21 national and international blues musicians. One of the south’s largest BBQ and blues festivals is set for Uptown Greenwood, South Carolina July 7 – 10, 2016. The South Carolina Festival of Discovery is in its 16th year and presented by Carolina Pride Foods.
“Competitive BBQ is growing at a tremendous pace,” says Greenwood City Manager Charlie Barrineau. “We are simply honored to bring the growth and excitement into our beautiful downtown.”
Over 85 teams are expected to compete in this years’ KCBS (Kansas City Barbecue Society) sanctioned event that includes a prize purse of $25,000, with the Grand Champion taking home more than $3,000. Because a large number of judges will be required to judge so many entries, officials expect the hotels and restaurants to be full of visitors throughout the weekend, producing a large economic impact for the Greenwood area. In an effort to prepare for a large draw, most of the teams will be relocated to Main Street which will again be closed during the entire Festival.
The blues music component of the Festival is referred to as the “Greenwood Blues Cruise.”
“Blues and BBQ are a part of southern heritage and South Carolina tradition,” said Greenwood Blues Cruise Artistic Director Gary Erwin. “The Blues Cruise is an eclectic mix of music in an intimate setting of Uptown Greenwood’s outdoor stage and small pubs and restaurants.”
Outdoor concerts will be performed at the CenturyLink Main Stage tent and throughout various “Blues Cruise” venues in the Uptown Greenwood area. Sponsored by The Index Journal, the “Blues Cruise” will feature venues including the Buenavista Café, Upstairs at T.W. Boon’s, Howard’s on Main, Caffé 312, Uchi E, The Mill House, Polo’s Restaurant, Sundance Gallery, Flynn’s on Maxwell, Buffalo Grill, and Inn on the Square. Friday evening, July 8, the Arts Center will host its Annual Blues and Brews concert in the Countybank Gallery.
Additional Festival events during the weekend include amusement rides, arts and crafts, and the annual Skins Hot Dog Eating Contest.
