Art Exhibit | A Drawn Conclusion

AC-ADC-Assets_Web Invite 2

Main Gallery | September 18 - October 31, 2019

A Drawn Conclusion features the work of four southeastern artists exploring the bounds of drawn media in areas of portraiture, observation of contemporary art culture and the remnants of generations past. On view in the main gallery through October 31, the exhibit features 49 mixed media drawings on paper, panel and plywood. The drawings fuse wood cut, paper cut, encaustic, embossing, watercolor, pastel and assemblage techniques with traditional methods in charcoal and graphite pencil. The featured artists include Tamie Beldue, Andrea Garland, Denise Stewart-Sanabria and Denise Wellbrock.

Tamie Beldue - Originally from upstate New York, Tamie Beldue is a contemporary American artist focused in mixed media drawings. Beldue received a BFA from the Columbus College of Art & Design and earned her MFA at the University of Cincinnati. Beldue has exhibited extensively in the US in group and solo exhibitions, including the Fort Wayne Museum of Art Realism Biennial, Southern Ohio Museum, North Carolina Museum of Art, Mobile Museum of Art, the Arnot Art Museum’s Re-Presenting Representation and the Fontbonne University Fine Arts Gallery. Her works are in the permanent collections of the Arnot Museum of Art, The DeYoung Museum, Howard & Judy Tullman Collection, James T. Dyke Collection of Contemporary Drawings and the Sandy & Diane Besser Collection. She currently resides in Black Mountain, North Carolina and is an Associate Professor of Art at the University of North Carolina Asheville. She is represented by Blue Spiral Galleries in Asheville, NC and Stanek Gallery in Philadelphia, PA.

Andrea Garland - Andrea Garland was raised in a home that her father and grandfather built on land that her family has inhabited for more than 250 years in the mountain region of South Carolina. She holds an MFA in drawing from Clemson University. She earned her BFA in painting and sculpture from Winthrop University where she was awarded the Clara Barrett Strait Scholarship for Outstanding Female Art Student. Prior to returning to graduate school, Andrea did freelance work and commissions for patrons across upstate South Carolina including private residences, businesses and local theaters. While earning her master’s degree, she was a teaching assistant in Intermediate and Advanced Drawing and worked as an intern at Clemson University’s Lee Gallery. Andrea’s most recent work features embossed impressions of functional and decorative textiles that she inherited from her family. Through her process, Andrea illustrates the influence that the residue of the past has on contemporary life in the American South. Her work has been shown in galleries across the United States and has been featured in competitive exhibitions throughout the Southeast. Images of her work are seen in publications such as JuxtaProse, a national literary magazine, The Clemson Chronicle Visual and Literary Magazine and the 14th Annual International Drawing Annual published by Manifest Gallery in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Denise Stewart-Sanabria - Originally from Massachusetts, Denise Stewart-Sanabria received her BFA in Painting from the University of Massachusetts/Amherst. She has lived in Knoxville, Tennessee since 1986. Sanabria paints hyper-realist “portraits” of everything from produce to subversive jelly donuts. The anthropomorphic narratives often are reflections on human behavior. She is also known for her life-size charcoal portrait drawings on plywood, which are cut out, mounted on wood bases, and staged in conceptual installations. Her work is included in various museums, private, and corporate collections including: The Tennessee State Museum, The Evansville Museum of Art in Indiana, The Knoxville Museum of Art, Firstbank TN, Pinnacle Banks, Omni and Opryland Hotels, Scripps Networks, Knoxville Botanical Gardens, Jewelry Television, TriStar Energy, and the corporate offices of McGhee Tyson Airport.
