JUROR INFORMATION: Kara Blanken Soper is an independent curator, art consultant, and critic based in Greenville, South Carolina. She received her MA in art history from Louisiana State University, where she focused her research on the art market and under-recognized modern and contemporary artists. Kara also has a double BA in art history and arts management from the College of Charleston. Upon graduating from LSU in 2013, Kara moved back home to South Carolina to be closer to family. Since then, she has committed herself to creating an environment in which contemporary art and artists can thrive in the South. She has worked for a variety of institutions throughout South Carolina in curatorial, fundraising and development, and community engagement capacities. She served as operations manager at 701 Center for Contemporary Art, where she helped to organize and design exhibitions that featured the work of regional, national, and international artists. She also managed an immersive artist residency program and other initiatives focused on the interaction between artistic disciplines, community engagement, and public art. Kara served as the curatorial program coordinator at Clemson University’s Center for Visual Arts-Greenville from 2014-2016. While there, she curated and developed programming and contemporary art exhibitions that connected the research interests of Clemson University art department faculty and the diverse needs of the Greenville community. She also partnered with local government and other creative non-profits to devise and implement creative place making initiatives designed to establish a dynamic arts district in Greenville. Kara has largely focused her independent curatorial practice on creating experiential exhibitions in “non-art” spaces. She currently assists artists with proposal development, grant writing, social media marketing, art placement, and gallery relations. Additionally, she helps individuals and businesses to build and expand their art collections by developing their tastes in contemporary art and facilitating relationships with living artists.
