Trick-or-Treaters, Ghosts, and Goblins to Fill the Streets of Uptown During Annual "Boo Bash"

October 18, 2006

Greenwood, SC – The Uptown Greenwood Development Corporation (UGDC) and Cornerstone (formerly the Greenwood, Edgefield, McCormick, Abbeville Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse) present the 6th Annual “Boo Bash” in Uptown Greenwood Thursday, October 26th beginning at 5:30 PM.  The event provides a safe venue for children to trick-or-treat.  It also stresses a positive message to children, “Say Boo to Drugs.” The message is used as a part of the Red Ribbon Week celebration in Greenwood County schools to reinforce youth staying drug and alcohol free.  Well over 2,000 youth participated in the 2005 event.

“This is always a wonderful opportunity for the Uptown Merchants to interact with the kids,” said UGDC chairman Chip Turner, owner of H. H. Turner Jewelers in Uptown Greenwood.  Merchants displaying a “Boo Bash” sign will be handing out candy from 5:30 PM – 7 PM.  There will also be numerous games available, pumpkin decorating, and much, much more.

The Greenwood City Police and Fire Department, Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office, Greenwood County EMS, and the South Carolina Highway Patrol will also join the evening by handing out candy and interacting with the youth on hand.

The ever growing “Boo Bash” Costume Contest will begin at 7:15 PM and is sponsored this year by Citizens Trust Insurance.  All of the ghosts, goblins, kids, and adults can compete for prizes in 8 categories.  Last year, nearly 400 youth and adults participated in this fun and event.

Several new events have been added to the 2006 “Boo Bash” schedule.  The Arts Council of Greenwood will host a “Haunted Fairytale Courtyard” from 5 PM – 7 PM in the courtyard at the Federal Building. Also new this year is the Hardee’s “Monster” Thickburger Eating Competition.  Participants see who has the largest appetite and can eat the most burgers in 12 minutes. To register, call 942-8448 before October 24th.  The Arts Center is also hosting the pumpkin carving contest this year. The final public judging will be held during the “Boo Bash” and awards will be given in 4 categories.  Participants need to register their carved pumpkin at the Arts Center from 10 AM – 6 PM October 23rd or 24th and the entry fee is $5.
