Teams will be cooking chicken, ribs, pork, brisket, and hash. Professional and “backyard” teams will compete for prizes totaling over $13,000. New in 2007, the Festival will host a four-hour KCBS Certified Barbeque Judge (CBJ) class Thursday, July 12. Nearly 80 individuals have pre-registered for the class to learn the art of judging barbecue. The class filled up in early June. Participants are coming as far away as Arizona, Illinois, Iowa, Virginia, Tennessee, and Alabama.
The second major portion of the Festival of Discovery is the annual Greenwood “Blues Cruise” featuring some of the best Blues music this region has to offer.
“This is one of our coolest Blues line-ups yet,” says Shrimp City Slim aka Gary Erwin, Artistic Director for the Blues Cruise.
Erwin has been promoting the Blues in South Carolina since 1986. His other ongoing projects include organizing annual blues festivals including the Southern Comfort Lowcountry Blues Bash in Charleston, Blues By the Sea in Kiawah, and the Carolina Downhome Blues Festival in Camden.
The 2007 Blues Cruise will feature regional and international Blues artists including “The Blues Doctor” Drink Small, Wanda Johnson, Australia’s Geoff Achison & the Souldiggers, Shane Pruitt, J. Michael King, Chocolate Thunder, Russ Wilson and His Mighty, Mighty Men, Congaree, Freddie Vanderford and of course Shrimp City Slim!
Wanda Johnson and Shrimp City Slim’s outdoor Blues show kicks the cruise off on Thursday, July 12 from 5:30 – 8 PM.
The Festival of Discovery is intended to be a family friendly event.
“In addition to Barbeque and Blues, there will be amusement rides, art and crafts, and other demonstrations for the public to enjoy,”Jones concluded.
