Uptown Greenwood

6th Annual SC Festival of Discovery July 13-15

July 13, 2006

Greenwood, SC – Uptown Greenwood, South Carolina will host the 6th Annual South Carolina Festival of Discovery July 13-15.  Discover a weekend of food, fun, music, amusement rides and much more as you experience and learn about the history, traditions, folklore, arts and crafts, music and dance, and vernacular culture of Greenwood, the South Carolina Upstate area, and the entire state.

"We are very pleased with the growth of the Festival of Discovery over the last six years," said Uptown Manager Angie Jones.  Jones continued, "The Festival is now an established stop on the national barbeque "circuit" and is growing as a regional Blues showcase."  The weekend Festival attendance is expected to be over 10,000.

The event features a Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) sanctioned and South Carolina State Championship cook-off on Friday July 14 and Saturday July 15 featuring over 40 of the best BBQ teams from all over the South! Teams will be cooking chicken, ribs, pork, brisket, and hash. Professional and “backyard” teams will compete for prizes totaling over $8,000. The public will be invited to purchase samples directly from many of the barbeque teams.

The second major portion of the Festival of Discovery is the annual Greenwood “Blues Cruise” featuring some of the best Blues music this region has to offer. Enjoy a free outdoor concert at the main stage area or jump on board the “Blues Cruise” and listen to Blues performers at venues in the Uptown area. Under the artistic direction of Shrimp City Slim (AKA Gary Erwin), Charleston’s own “Low Country Blues Ambassador,” the 2006 Blues Cruise will feature eleven regional Blues artists including “The Blues Doctor” Drink Small, MacArnold & Plate Full O’ Blues, Big Ron Hunter, Wanda Johnson, The King Bees, and of course Shrimp City Slim!  Drink Small’s outdoor Blues show kicks the cruise off on Thursday, July 13 from 5:30 – 8 PM with a Live After 5 performance sponsored by the Greenwood Partnership Alliance, 94.1 The Bull, and Countybank.

The Festival of Discovery is intended to be a family friendly event. “In addition to Barbeque and Blues, there will be amusement rides, art and crafts, and other demonstrations for the public to enjoy,” Jones concluded.
